I read the newspaper because...It is informative. The newspaper gives details on many events and venues.
Becky Hilliard from St. Francisville, LA
I read the newspaper, but far, far less than I used to because virtually every newspaper has changed from a bearer of facts to an advocate of a slanted opinion, especially in the reporting of politics, which used to be labeled clearly in columns and/or on editorial pages only. I say this with authority, having experienced a 17-year career with The Associated Press that began in 1962 when newspapers were plentiful, AM and PM, and dedicated to simply reporting the truth. I have now limited my major city newspaper reading to the weekend only and primarily for sports results and humor. I am lucky enough to have a weekly, local newspaper, which still attempts to serve the public instead of influencing it. In my opinion, mnajor newspapers are slowly suffocating themselves. Truthful reporting of facts would be a breath of fresh air, but I think major city newpapers have a limited future.

I read the newspaper because... I can reread news and can go back to the print news later for referencing. I also read because it helps me stay informed of what is happening in communities I want to learn about. Newspapers have a permanancy other media outlets do not, and they are more likely to be valid and reliable since you can track down writers and editors for clarification on news stories.

I read the newspaper because...I was taught in grade school that reading was fundamental. We were often given assignments that required that we read a newspaper article and write a summary of what the article was about. I realized through those assignments that I could stay on top of what was going in around not only my community but the world. I read the news paper from the front to the back every day. I like being on top of what's going on in the world. It helps with socializing when you can hold a conversation about what is happening around you. I guess you can say that I read because I want to be knowledgable what's happening around me.
Andrea D. Snearl from Brusly, LA
I read the newspaper because...I am trying to solve a 50 year old mystery. My husband, Charles Terry Jr. was born in Leesville and so was his mother Jenny Louise Edwards, who was married there in 1954. My husband and his (3)siblings were seperated from her and their father about 1959 and raised by strangers in foster care in Detroit. The Black Edwards family lived on Union St. Jenny's father was George Edwards and her Mother Lillian; Jenny may have been one of 10 to 12 Children. If Jenny were alive today she would be about 74 years old. I am hoping to find her or any old family members who may know of her and what happened. We will be visiting Leesville in November. please contact wendy333211@yahoo.com if you have any information. I would like to place this info into an add at the Leesville paper.

I read the newspaper because...I am now residing in Texas and have been here since 1969, however, I was very happy to find my hometown newspaper online. I still have family members in Deridder, and I enjoy keeping up with the news and calling them about some of the things that are happening in the city. I also enjoy visiting them at least once a year, even though I moved away long ago, Deridder is still my hometown.

I read the newspaper because...they give more in depth reporting. Radio and TV are fine for headlines, but they can't spend the time necessary to get the inside story. Newspapers don't have the time limits of broadcast media ... their are only so many minutes in a day and if you're already scheduled to broadcast the networks' shows you can't expand as easily as a newspaper can

I read the newspaper because...I can find the information easily, whether I am looking for local or national. The newspaper is a relaxing part of my daily routine. I can always us the newspaper for reference to a particular advertisement that I have seen or to refer to an article I would like to read again.
Karen Wilson from Alexandria LA
I read the newspaper because...I trust what is printed and if I read something I don't like, I can throw my paper. It's too expensive to do that with my TV or PC.
Doug Nobles from Monroe, La.
I read the newspaper because...I need to know what's going on in my community so when my students ask me "what's happening" each Monday morning, I can tell them. I teach and one of the reading strategies I use in my classroom is the Hammond Star Report. Each student has to find a story in the paper, write a brief synopsis and share with the rest of the class. We don't have time to read the entire paper during class, so by the time we complete the synopsis, we all know what's going on in our neighborhood, in our state.
Mrs. Shelly T from Kentwood, LA
I read the newspaper because...it's fun.
marc from New Orleans
I read the newspaper because...I like to stay abreast of, "what is going on around me and in the world."
Bernice Thibodeaux from Lecompte, La.
I read the newspaper because it gives an in-depth analysis of current events in a fashion more suitable to my eyesight than technology alternatives. I can clip items out and save in various files. Besides, the newspaper is the best place to find obituaries, the crossword puzzle, TV schedule and current events I would like to attend, all in the same place every day so I don't have to search. I get recipes, check sales and clip coupons from the newspaper as well. Those savings more than pay for the subscription. I keep up with LSU sports religiously in my paper. I read opinions from nationally known columnists, too, and have at times written a letter to the editor. One cannot retain everything through broadcast media nor reply as you can with the newspaper.

I read the newspaper because it's important to know what's going on in the community and the world. I need to know in case their are any oppertunities to make a change for the better with the information available.
Laurie from Lacassine Louisiana
I read the newspaper because...I try to keep up with comming up events in our area. That I might be able to, become involved in. Or maybe just know there are things happening, I may like to go attend. The newspaper is one of very few sources, of information that give a better total story behind events from, local - Regional -& from around the globe.
This information can be studied more easily than wired media, which mostly gives parts of the entire stories. I also like to read other local person's opinions on happenings that involve or relate to our local interest.
I remember before the days of Woe & inflated times when the town Talk came in 5 to 8 sections, covering a vast array of peoples from every walk of life. As a consumer I understand the various formats that, people living in the Fast lane use for certain needs. But to get the more complete stories the Paper media is the most leisurely way to obtain the news
and other items of interest for the norm. At times it is a very good source to display items for sale or to check for things items to buy. In these days of economic cut-backs the paper is the only market that can be researched at any given time or place. The Alexandria Daily Town Talk is my source of reading enjoyment, everyday of the week.

I read the newspaper because...It is essentially my duty as a Louisiana resident to stay alert and on top of all current events. I will no longer put a blind eye towards the situaions and occurences that occur around my community and elsewhere; because I feel strongly that my daily newspaper will report accurate information and will always keep me attentive on the daily happenings that are taking place.
I'sha Ryan from Hammond,la
I read the newspaper because...I love getting the news in a comprehensive way. I can read something as fast or as slow as I choose, and I can always go back to re-read, something you can't do when watching the news on TV. Perhaps I'm old fashioned, but I want something tangible to hold in my hands while I read. Plus, depending on where you get your newspaper, it covers more local information than television. They have to report on more news stories from areas that may not be of any significance to me. My local paper covers information that's relevant to me.
William H. Parr from St. Martinville, LA
I read the newspaper because... I like being up to date on all aspects of the news. There are many things going on in my town and in my state I think I need to know about and I love to read no matter what the subject matter is.

I read the newspaper because...it is essentially the life line to my community. Reading my paper keeps me on top of what is going on, what news and events are shaping up, and sadly enough, keeps me informed of deaths in my community. One of my favorites though, is the garage sale listings for the weekend. With such a wealth of information, why would I not read my paper?

I read the newspaper because...I moved away from New Iberia,LA to Texas about two years ago. I miss the people and the hospitality Louisiana is known for, thank goodness I can cook all the delicious meals we are so accustomed to that cost and arm and a leg in Texas. I like reading the Daily Iberian everyday because it keeps me close to my roots and it never lets me forget that Iam a Cajun and that Cajuns are people too.
