I read the newspaper because I like to stay informed about what's going on in my community. It is very convienant because I can read the newspaper when I have to time for local news, not when it is playing on tv. Thanks HoumaToday.com!
Holly Cantrelle from Schriever
I read the newspaper because...I feel the need to be kept current on local & some national news. As some issues, events and other news is important to me and my family. It could effect our everyday lives. Such as the oil spill. I learned from local news and coverage of the accident that Louisiana is responsible for a sizeable portion of seafood and other fish sold in the market. I like to see if the road repairs are going to affect my drive to work, school or Dr. appointments. My main reason for reading the local news and viewing it is that I don't watch TV. I will watch a movie or a program every once in a while. I make sure to watch the weather channel every evening and every morning. That is about the extent of my TV viewing.

Everyday in Savannah, GA, I read my local hometown paper, The Hammond Daily Star. Reading the newspaper allows me to keep up with local news. More importantly it makes me feel like I'm there in my parents house reading a copy. After 10 years in Georgia, Louisiana is still and always will be home.

Michael Jenkins from Shreveport, La
I read the newspaper because...you find out what is going on in several places at one time without ever leaving home you don't have to worry about paper change, if the machine is out, or if the dog chewed it up, or or you going to get wet walking to the drive way, when ever you want it, it is there waiting for you news your way.
Bonita Scarbrough from DeRidder,Louisiana
I READ THE NEWSPAPER BECAUSE IT'S VERY IMPORTANT TO THAT HOW U KNOW WHATS GOING IN YOUR CITY,STATE NATIONAL WORLD WIDE I THINK EVERYONE SHOULD READ THE PAPER SOME MIGHT THINK ITS BORING BUT I DON'T EVERY MORNING I GET ON MY COMPUTER IF I CAN'T GET TO THE STORE I'LL GO ON THE WEBSITE AND READ EVERYTHING SO THATS WHY I READ THE NEWSPAPER.
TRINA FONTENOT from Ville Platte, LA
I read the newspaper because...I need to know what's going on in my community so when my students ask me "what's happening" each Monday morning, I can tell them. I teach and one of the reading strategies I use in my classroom is the Hammond Star Report. Each student has to find a story in the paper, write a brief synopsis and share with the rest of the class. We don't have time to read the entire paper during class, so by the time we complete the synopsis, we all know what's going on in our neighborhood, in our state.
Mrs. Shelly T from Kentwood, LA
I read the newspaper because...It is essentially my duty as a Louisiana resident to stay alert and on top of all current events. I will no longer put a blind eye towards the situaions and occurences that occur around my community and elsewhere; because I feel strongly that my daily newspaper will report accurate information and will always keep me attentive on the daily happenings that are taking place.

I lived in the area for a year and a half after Katrina, and fell in love with the most unique state in the Union and its gracious, resilient people. Reading the paper allows me to continue to see what is going on in the area, and to keep an eye out for job opportunities that could help me get back to the place I want to be.
Trisha Belbot from Grand Rapids, MI
I read the newspaper because..There are several reasons l read your paper. As you print " If you don't want it printed, Don't let it happen" That is the gospel!! My name has appeared in The Inquisitor" when i was citied for possession of marijuana and paraphernalia....I was guilty. I wish they would make it legal. Bossier PD were nothing short of rude ( to put it nicely) I am totally amazed at the number of people arrested for marijuana... I decided to send this email after reading your article about Chief Bloxom from Minden. I grew up in that town and could not wait to get the heck out of that town. I moved to Bossier , for the most part it is a great place to live. Bossier PD concerns me with the way they operate... Just because you wear a badge , does not make you a saint. Keep up the great work and hopefully my name will not show up agin Debra Plunkett
Debra Plunkett from Bossier CIty
I read the newspaper because...I work all over the country and like to keep up with the area events and happenings.
Bobby Faust from Baldwin, LA
I read the newspaper because...Having been raised in this area, we returned to Minden for retirement. Minden Press-Herald assist us in updates of changes during our twenty year absence. Additionally, Press-Herald provides knowledge of current events and news affecting Minden; and, Press-Herald provides history of Minden, especially through the Cameo articles, and provides updates of persons we know. Also, being animal lovers, the Press-Herald provides excellent coverage to target lost and found pets. We are proud to have such a good paper in our City of Minden.
Margaret Dampier from City of Minden
I read the newspaper because...the daily newspapers, Times-Picayune and The Advocate has good local relevant news about the metro areas, the state and of course, the best source for the Gulf oil disaster. I look for local business news and always use and enjoy what the dailies have -- and want more. Weeklies like the Ponchatoula Times and St. Tammany Farmer and St. Tammany News are enjoyable because they are ALL LOCAL. Most editions are packed with smiling faces that reflected what's right with our communities. And in print and on the Web, the papers I enjoy and rely on seem to be changing so thay can truly deliver news beyond their print deadline. These papers provide local government, local sports, local people news. AND local Classifieds and ads from businesses I know. Some I want to know more about, so bring on the local business news! The Internet is not killing newspapers. The smart ones I read are using the Web to do a better job delivering news and advertising in new ways beyond their print papers. Here's to more good newspapers in Louisiana.

Donna Lofton from Boyce, LA.
I read the newspaper because...Hammond and the surrounding areas are home to me. Since I no longer live in Louisiana, this is the best way to keep up with everything that affects the community I grew up in. Family can keep you in tune with what is going on, but the newspaper keeps you up to date. Plus it gives me that "homey" feeling reading about places and people I know.
Susan Thornhill from Banner Elk, NC
I read the newspaper because...I can't do without it!
Melanie from Gonzales, LA
I read the newspaper as a way of weaving the past, present, and future. Two hundred years ago, very few people could read. One hundred years ago, it was a "big deal" to be listed in the newspaper. They listed everything in the paper from arrests, constable news, out of town visitors, auctions, and such. Pretty soon, I'm afraid the newspaper will become a thing of the past just like many other ideal things. There's nothing like reading the newspaper!
Sherry Perkins from DeRidder, La
I read the newspaper because...I like to stay informed about local events and community events.
Cathy Chapman from kentwood, la

Kenisha Thymes from Zachary, La
I read the newspaper because...I want to stay informed about the world around me, as the local things happening. The newspaper helps me with weather information so I can be alert to changes in weather, it helps me with keeping knowledgeable about changes I need to know about too. In a few pages, my newspaper informs me of all the things happening in my world and everyone else's. The news on television is not the detailed report that the newspaper delivers, television just gives an overview, where the newspaper gives all the facts. I wouldn't like a world without newspapers, it would be really bland!

I read the newspaper because...I want to stay informed. "A mind is a terrible thing to waste". I actually spend more time reading books-theology,history,literary classics and have started a new blog in a new year. I have a book for you Ms. Afro Counselor of FL-"The History of the Decline and Fall of the Roman Empire" by Edward Gibbon. You can get an abridged edition of 1500pp. This project may take you into 2012 but it's worth the read! Dr.King reread it OFTEN because he saw a lot of paralells to our society(even more today!). Thank you Hammond Star for providing this forum. The true definition of slavery is when one group keeps another in IGNORANCE!!. Frederick Douglas felt his chains loosen when he learned to read and write-he realized his master could not control him anymore. My challenge to people of ALL AGES and RACES: keep mind ACTIVE,you're never too old to learn!
Mike Grigas from IL

I read the Town Talk every day online and I feel so "connected" with what's going on in my home area.
