I read the newspaper because... My husband is serving in the military, and we have lived out of state for the last eight years, but I still read our "home" newspaper online regularly. We know we will be retiring back to Louisiana in a few years, and we like to be informed about what is happening there. We care about its people, its resources, and its leadership. It will always be home to us.

Brent Cormier from Austin, Texas
I read the newspaper because... I like being up to date on all aspects of the news. There are many things going on in my town and in my state I think I need to know about and I love to read no matter what the subject matter is.
mary a geason from united states
I read the newspaper because...I like to stay abreast of what's happening locally. From time to time I'll remember to watch the local news but my favorite past time is reading. The local news doesn't necessarily report all matters concerning my community. The nwespaper is a great way to start or end the day for me. I'm also showing my children how to select an article, memerize it and then share the information with our family. Life is short. A beautiful mind should be used to the fullest. I love my local newspaper "The Leesville Daily Leader!"
Marie A. Frilot from Leesville, LA
I read the newspaper because...it's a lunchtime ritual. It is a great way can keep up local and state news - a very different set of news and focus than I receive when I get home and watch the National News and political talk shows.

I read the newspaper because...I want to stay informed about the world around me, as the local things happening. The newspaper helps me with weather information so I can be alert to changes in weather, it helps me with keeping knowledgeable about changes I need to know about too. In a few pages, my newspaper informs me of all the things happening in my world and everyone else's. The news on television is not the detailed report that the newspaper delivers, television just gives an overview, where the newspaper gives all the facts. I wouldn't like a world without newspapers, it would be really bland!
Nell Cook from Independence, LA

I read the newspaper because...I grew up in Louisiana. I graduated at Franklin High School in 1960. Viet Nam, and many other life's road's have taken me far from the peace and serenity of South Louisiana. Although I still have many relatives who live there, I now reside in Northwest Arkansas. It is through the reading of the Banner Tribune on-line that I am able to still be there...to learn of the changes, and the unchanged, and to keep the smells of the bayous, the seafood, the sugarcane mills in operation, and so many other fabrics of my life, deeply embedded in my memory. I'm unable to get back to those days and places, and to be able to read the Banner Tribune (Franklin's Newspaper)keeps me in touch, and makes me feel as if I'm still there in many ways....still the young boy who would spend the day at Grand Lake, setting out crawfish nets and running the lines, waking up to the music of T.K. Hulin, The Lafayette Playboys, and so many other great bands and vocalists. It is only through the reading of the Banner Tribune (the newspaper my dad used to call the Banana Trombone) that I'm able to remain there in God's country.
Phillip H. Jones from Northwest Arkansas
I read the newspaper because... I like it.
Sam from Baton Rouge
I read the newspaper because...I trust what is printed and if I read something I don't like, I can throw my paper. It's too expensive to do that with my TV or PC.
Doug Nobles from Monroe, La.
I read the newspaper because...I have been gone from Avoyelles Parish (Mansura) for over 40 years but it's still home. I only come back every 2-3 years so the paper is way to "keep up" with happy events as well as deaths of persons and families I know and recognize. I read the Town Talk every day online and I feel so "connected" with what's going on in my home area.
Alice Mast from Baltimore, MD
I read the newspaper because...I love to know what going on in my hometown community. I also enjoy classifies, and the people section. Newspapers are a great way to stay educated and in touch.

I read the newspaper because...I moved away from Abbeville, La 5 years ago but my heart is still there. I always want to keep myself updated on whats going on in "my" city.
Destini Harrison from Abbeville, La
I read the newspaper because...I feel the need to be kept current on local & some national news. As some issues, events and other news is important to me and my family. It could effect our everyday lives. Such as the oil spill. I learned from local news and coverage of the accident that Louisiana is responsible for a sizeable portion of seafood and other fish sold in the market. I like to see if the road repairs are going to affect my drive to work, school or Dr. appointments. My main reason for reading the local news and viewing it is that I don't watch TV. I will watch a movie or a program every once in a while. I make sure to watch the weather channel every evening and every morning. That is about the extent of my TV viewing.
Tammy Smith from Sulphur, La

I read the newspaper because...Having been raised in this area, we returned to Minden for retirement. Minden Press-Herald assist us in updates of changes during our twenty year absence. Additionally, Press-Herald provides knowledge of current events and news affecting Minden; and, Press-Herald provides history of Minden, especially through the Cameo articles, and provides updates of persons we know. Also, being animal lovers, the Press-Herald provides excellent coverage to target lost and found pets. We are proud to have such a good paper in our City of Minden.

I have lived in Alexandria for 35 years now...and get concise and up to date news about exactly what is going on around town....politics....the arts...you name it, I find it here. It's far better to get the news locally than to have it filtered down from outside sources.
PD Poole from Alexandria
I read the newspaper because... i just recently moved to this beautiful state and wanted to find things to do right away without just driving and bouncing around. I also get my daily fix of the politians arguing back and forth and telling us how great they are and all the changes that will be made by both parties. I usually find this next to the comics!

I read the newspaper because...I am trying to solve a 50 year old mystery. My husband, Charles Terry Jr. was born in Leesville and so was his mother Jenny Louise Edwards, who was married there in 1954. My husband and his (3)siblings were seperated from her and their father about 1959 and raised by strangers in foster care in Detroit. The Black Edwards family lived on Union St. Jenny's father was George Edwards and her Mother Lillian; Jenny may have been one of 10 to 12 Children. If Jenny were alive today she would be about 74 years old. I am hoping to find her or any old family members who may know of her and what happened. We will be visiting Leesville in November. please contact wendy333211@yahoo.com if you have any information. I would like to place this info into an add at the Leesville paper.

I read the newspaper because...being a local elected official for 8 years, I must keep up with the minutes of meetings, etc. and other information vital to stay on top of issues that affected my constituents. But more than that, I believe that a local, community-based newspaper covers our stories in a unique way - just the way the community itself is unique. Most of the articles in our local newspaper never make the Baton Rouge newspaper, so it's a way to stay in touch with the happenings on "the west side" of the river (which is absolutely the BEST side).

I read the newspaper because...I want to stay informed. "A mind is a terrible thing to waste". I actually spend more time reading books-theology,history,literary classics and have started a new blog in a new year. I have a book for you Ms. Afro Counselor of FL-"The History of the Decline and Fall of the Roman Empire" by Edward Gibbon. You can get an abridged edition of 1500pp. This project may take you into 2012 but it's worth the read! Dr.King reread it OFTEN because he saw a lot of paralells to our society(even more today!). Thank you Hammond Star for providing this forum. The true definition of slavery is when one group keeps another in IGNORANCE!!. Frederick Douglas felt his chains loosen when he learned to read and write-he realized his master could not control him anymore. My challenge to people of ALL AGES and RACES: keep mind ACTIVE,you're never too old to learn!
